“Thainess”

The art collection, purchased exclusively for this hotel, is curated around the theme of identity in Thai Society. “Thainess” is used in Thai to describe the aura around the Thai identity.  The term "Thainess" is as complex to define as the notion of "identity" itself. Some relate"Thainess" to Thai food and its complexity and harmony; others to Thai Wisdom, wellness or even fun. From the political point of view, it is even more delicate, as it evokes among some people, social exclusion, rather than inclusion and equality. 

In Thailand, artists tackle these widely varying concepts, with artistic notions ranging from individual points of view to social and historical contexts; from subjects of personal interest to a broader spectrum of shared values within the community.

The collection has also been curated considering that, whatever its origin, the mosaic of identities is intimately connected to the environment and to the crises that humanity faces: the drought in northern Thailand that affects farmers and the entire agricultural sector; the increasing awareness of endangered species, such as the Thai Bull; or the unique textile designs by South Korean tribes. All these themes are a part of the collection and they reflect some of the main issues behind these artists’ creations.

GI-OK JEON

Gi-ok Jeon is a Korean contemporary artist who studied Ink Wash Painting in Seoul and Beijing before moving and settling in Bangkok, Thailand. Gi-ok inquires her multicultural identity, the motherhood and daily life. Her works often represent Korean heritage, Chinese aesthetics, and Thai life.Go-Ok states: "My main theme, as an immigrant artist, is about searching for an identity in relationship to my current living space in Thai society.As an artist, mother, housewife, and woman, I try to represent each one of my roles, and I present my multiple identities by means of Patoong and Hanbok: Thai woman’s clothes and Korean traditional clothes, the images of my daughter, half Korean and half Thai.

Charinthorn Rachurutchata

Charinthorn Rachurutchata currently lives and works in Bangkok. After her university graduation she started her career as a fashion photographer where she developed an interest in capturing the evanescent quality of female beauty. With years of work in the fashion industry, her interest has shifted toward art, producing more conceptual works with a touch playfulness in which she expresses a very personal vision of her perceptions, intuitions and reflections. Rachurutchata has exhibited her work nationally and internationally in leading galleries and museums.

Sutee Kunavichayanont

Sutee Kunavichayanont is a renowned Thai artist whose works have been displayed in renowned galleries and museum both in Thailand and internationally. His artworks deal with society, politics, history and "Thainess" in a sophisticated way. Thematically, his work reflects the rapid social, economic and political changes that have affected Thailand since the 1990s, the artist using his art to critically probe nationalism, power, identity, history and cultural convention in Thailand and beyond. Producing pieces in a wide variety of media, the artist mines familiar and formal languages to engage the viewer in a playful examination of complex questions. As well as making art, Sutee is a curator and a lecturer at Silpakorn University. The artist works and lives in Bangkok.
